SSTI has been working with the Kansas DOT to understand the transportation-related impacts of school siting decisions and develop recommendations for how access to schools can be improved via siting. Kansas DOT approached SSTI for assistance with this project after becoming aware of the way that school siting decisions affect state and local governments. Along with their impacts on health and safety, new schools may necessitate major pedestrian and vehicular infrastructure improvements by other levels of government, generate traffic congestion, and increase the day-to-day costs of student transportation. This webinar explored the transportation issues related to school siting in Kansas, which are common in a number of states, and detailed SSTI’s recommendations.
