Speeding and distracted driving are two common safety risks for children traveling to school. Addressing these issues in a data-driven way can result in a better understanding of the scope of the problem and the effectiveness of the solution. This brief examines how the programs in five communities measured success in reducing the numbers of speeding cars and distracted drivers. The program leaders used a variety of activities to decrease dangerous driving behavior, including installing or upgrading pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, enforcing speed and distracted driving laws and conducting public information campaigns.
