Walking routes to and from bus stops and transit stations are critical for riders, but sidewalk data can be hard to come by. Washington State DOT is wrapping up a two-year effort to build a unified pedestrian infrastructure dataset that is compatible with OpenStreetMap and geared toward accessibility-forward planning.

Meet Our Speakers
Mary Dubose
Mary joined the Washington State Department of Transportation in 2024 as the Roadside Data Asset Steward. She is responsible for the data on crosswalks, curb ramps, and sidewalks on state routes, as well as roadside barriers.
Kurt Winner
Kurt Winner is a Data Analyst within Washington State Department of Transportation’s Public Transportation Division. He’s been focused on integrating accessibility measures into the Public Transportation Plan. Prior to that he worked as a Data Program Manager working in Transportation Demand Management and Commute Trip Reduction for local properties and businesses at Commute Seattle.
Dr. Anat Caspi
Anat is the Director and Co-founder of the Taskar Center for Accessible Technology at the University of Washington. The Taskar Center runs the OpenSidewalks project and “develops, translates and deploys open source universally accessible technologies, with a focus on benefiting populations with motor limitations or speech impairment.”
