Intercity buses and state DOTs: Improving connections and information

April 24, 2015

Intercity buses are once again a popular way to travel. On-line booking and ticketing, wi-fi on board, and curbside pick-up have made bus travel comfortable, convenient, and competitive with other options. But information is scattered over many websites, and bus lines may not connect with each other, making planning a multi-city trip difficult. What is the role of state DOTs and how do intercity buses fit into their transportation plans and operations?

Charlie Zelle, Commissioner of Minnesota DOT, and former CEO of Jefferson Bus Lines, knows the importance of intercity buses in connecting Midwest cities. Commissioner Zelle was joined by Kyle Emge, Manager, Capital Programs & Operations at MassDOT – Rail & Transit Division. MassDOT recently developed the first comprehensive map of intercity buses, rail lines, and ferries in New England to help travelers find the right transportation option.
